Treating Addiction and Mental Health Together
Addiction rarely happens in isolation. Many people who struggle with drugs or alcohol are also living with depression, anxiety, trauma, or another mental health condition. Sometimes the substance use came first. Often, it started as a way to cope with symptoms no one had diagnosed.
When both conditions are present, it’s called a dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorders. Treating only one side rarely works. Untreated depression can drive relapse, and ongoing substance use can make mental health symptoms worse.
At Recovery Works Healing Center, dual diagnosis care is at the heart of what we do. Our outpatient programs in Dayton treat addiction and mental health at the same time, with the same team.

Depression and Addiction Treatment in Dayton
Depression and substance use often feed each other. Alcohol and drugs can temporarily numb emotional pain, but they deepen depression over time and disrupt sleep, relationships, and motivation. Our dual diagnosis program helps you understand that cycle. It treats depressive symptoms through therapy and psychiatric care, and builds healthier ways to cope.
Anxiety and Substance Abuse Treatment
Many people use alcohol, cannabis, benzodiazepines, or opioids to quiet anxiety. That relief is short-lived and can lead to dependence. We treat both the anxiety and the substance use, using approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you manage worry and panic without relying on substances.
How Our Dual Diagnosis Program Works
Every client starts with a thorough assessment covering substance use history, psychiatric symptoms, medical history, lab work, family history, past trauma, and social factors. This helps us see the full picture, not just the most visible problem.
Your plan addresses both conditions together. You won't be sent to one provider for addiction and another for mental health.
Depending on your needs, treatment can include:
- Individual counseling and psychotherapy
- Group therapy with peers facing similar challenges
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
- Medication-assisted treatment for opioid or alcohol use disorder
- Case management for housing, employment, and medical care
- Crisis intervention for acute emotional distress
- Recovery housing for a stable, sober living environment
Levels of Care
Dual diagnosis treatment is available within our:
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): three 3-hour groups a week plus individual counseling
- Non-Intensive Outpatient Program: two 2-hour groups a week plus individual counseling
- Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

Why Integrated Care Matters
When mental health and addiction are treated separately, people often fall through the cracks. They may be told to “get sober first” before addressing depression, or have their substance use overlooked in mental health care. Integrated dual diagnosis treatment closes that gap. One team works toward one goal: your whole recovery.
