Medication-Assisted Treatment in Dayton, Ohio

Medication and Counseling, Working Together

Opioid addiction changes how the brain works. Willpower alone often isn’t enough to stop the cravings and withdrawal that keep people stuck. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) uses FDA-approved medications to ease withdrawal, reduce cravings, and give you the stability to focus on recovery.

At Recovery Works Healing Center, MAT is part of a complete outpatient treatment program. We combine Suboxone (buprenorphine) or Vivitrol (naltrexone) with individual counseling, group therapy, and case management, because medication works best when you’re also building the skills to stay well.

Please note: MAT at Recovery Works includes counseling and treatment. Our MAT services are available to clients who are enrolled in one of our clinical programs, such as outpatient, IOP, or dual diagnosis treatment. We don’t offer medication-only or prescription-only services. If you’re looking for a prescriber alone, we’re happy to talk with you about why combined care may help, and to point you toward other options.

Medications We Offer

Suboxone (Buprenorphine)

Suboxone contains buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, combined with naloxone. It reduces opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing the same high as full opioids, which helps you feel steady enough to engage in treatment. Suboxone is used for opioid use disorder, including addiction to heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers.

Vivitrol (Naltrexone)

Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection of naltrexone, an opioid blocker. It prevents opioids from producing their effects and can reduce cravings. Vivitrol is FDA-approved for both opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder. Because it’s an opioid blocker, you need to be opioid-free for a period before starting. Your provider will explain how long.

Your provider will help you decide which medication, if any, is right for you, based on your history, goals, and health.

How MAT Works at Recovery Works

1. Assessment:

You’ll complete a comprehensive assessment of your substance use, mental health, medical history, and lab work. Walk-ins are welcome Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.

2. Treatment plan:

Your team recommends a level of care, such as IOP or outpatient, and determines whether MAT is appropriate.

3. Medication start:

Your provider starts your medication and monitors how you respond.

4. Ongoing care:

You’ll attend counseling and group sessions while your medical team adjusts your medication as needed.

5. Long-term planning:

Your team helps you decide how long to continue MAT. For many people, that’s months or longer

Why MAT Includes Counseling

Medication treats the physical side of addiction. Counseling helps with everything else: triggers, stress, relationships, trauma, and the habits built around using. Research consistently shows that combining medication with behavioral therapy supports better outcomes than either approach alone.

That’s why every Recovery Works MAT client is also enrolled in clinical treatment. Depending on your needs, that may include:

The Dayton area has been hit hard by the opioid crisis, and fentanyl has made the drug supply more dangerous than ever. If you or someone you love is using opioids, MAT combined with treatment is one of the most effective, evidence-based paths to recovery.
