Navigating Sobriety During the Summer: How Outpatient Programs Can Help

Summer is a time of warmth, sunshine, and social gatherings. For many, it brings a sense of relaxation and fun. However, for those striving to maintain sobriety and abstinence from drugs and alcohol, summer can also present unique challenges. The increase in social events, outdoor activities, and vacations can often be accompanied by temptations and triggers that make it difficult to stay on track with recovery goals. At Recovery Works Healing Center, we understand these challenges and are here to support you with our comprehensive outpatient program.

The Challenges of Summer Sobriety

Social Gatherings: BBQs, beach parties, and family reunions often involve alcohol and can be challenging environments for someone in recovery. The social pressure to drink or use substances can be intense, making it hard to refuse and stay sober.

Increased Free Time: With longer days and vacations, there’s often more free time during the summer. For some, this can lead to boredom, which is a common trigger for relapse. Without a structured schedule, it’s easy to fall back into old habits.

Stress and Expectations: The pressure to have a “perfect” summer filled with fun and relaxation can create stress. This stress, coupled with the desire to fit in and be part of the festivities, can make maintaining sobriety more difficult.

How Our Outpatient Program Can Help

At Recovery Works Healing Center, our outpatient program is designed to provide the support and tools needed to navigate these summer challenges successfully. Here’s how we can help:

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) MAT combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. These medications help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to focus on recovery goals. Our medical team works closely with each client to develop a personalized treatment plan that supports their specific needs. To learn more about MAT offered at RWHC, click here:

Counseling and Therapy Individual and group counseling sessions are integral parts of our outpatient program. Our experienced therapists help clients understand the root causes of their addiction, develop coping strategies, and build resilience. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and other evidence-based approaches are used to address the psychological aspects of addiction.

Peer Support Connecting with others who are on a similar recovery journey can be incredibly empowering. Our support groups provide a safe and supportive environment where clients can share their experiences, challenges, and successes. These groups foster a sense of community and belonging, which is essential for long-term recovery.

Housing We provide stable and structured recovery housing designed to support individuals in their journey toward sobriety. Our housing services offer a safe, drug-free environment that promotes accountability and community. Residents benefit from a supportive living space where they can focus on their recovery goals, participate in therapy and group support, and develop essential coping strategies. This stable environment minimizes exposure to triggers and stressors, helping individuals stay on track during their recovery process.

Strategies for a Sober Summer

In addition to our outpatient program, here are some tips to help maintain sobriety during the summer months:

Plan Ahead: If you know you’ll be attending an event where alcohol or drugs may be present, plan how you’ll handle the situation. Bring a non-alcoholic beverage and have a response ready if someone offers you a drink.

Stay Active: Engage in sober activities that you enjoy, such as hiking, swimming, or playing sports. Staying active can help reduce boredom and stress.

Stay Connected: Keep in touch with your support network, whether it’s friends, family, or a recovery group. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you’re feeling tempted or overwhelmed.

Set Boundaries: It’s okay to say no to events or activities that might jeopardize your sobriety. Prioritize your well-being and recovery.

Summer can be a challenging time for those in recovery, but with the right support and strategies, it’s possible to maintain sobriety and enjoy the season. At Recovery Works Healing Center, our outpatient program offers the comprehensive care and community support needed to achieve long-term recovery goals. Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking for additional support, we’re here to help you navigate the summer and beyond.

Balancing Act: Dual Diagnosis Care: Why Treating Mental Health and Addiction Together Matters

Individuals with mental health conditions often experience a complex interplay with substance abuse, as the two are intricately connected. Mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, can contribute to a heightened vulnerability for substance abuse as individuals may turn to drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism to alleviate emotional distress. Conversely, substance abuse can exacerbate existing mental health conditions or trigger the onset of new ones. The chemical effects of substances on the brain can disrupt neurotransmitter balance, influencing mood regulation and cognitive function. This relationship between mental health and substance abuse underscores the importance of integrated treatment approaches that address both aspects simultaneously, aiming for comprehensive recovery and improved overall well-being.

Imagine trying to tackle both mental health and addiction at the same time—it’s a balancing act! This is where dual diagnosis medical treatment comes in, offering a helping hand to individuals facing both mental health and addiction challenges.

Understanding Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorders, happens when someone faces both mental health and addiction issues at the same time. It’s like dealing with two challenges on a shared path, and addressing both is key to finding balance. Sometimes, one can lead to the other. For example, mental health struggles might make someone turn to substances for relief. On the flip side, addiction can mess with the brain, leading to mental health issues. Treating both partners ensures a more harmonious dance.

Common co-occurring disorders involving mental health conditions and addiction include:

  • Depression and Substance Abuse: Depression and alcohol or drug abuse often coexist, with individuals using substances as a means to self-medicate and alleviate depressive symptoms.
  • Anxiety Disorders and Substance Abuse: Conditions like generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder may lead individuals to turn to substances for relief from overwhelming anxiety, creating a cycle of dependence.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Abuse: Individuals who have experienced trauma, leading to PTSD, may turn to substances to numb emotional pain or manage flashbacks, creating a link between trauma and addiction.
  • Bipolar Disorder and Substance Abuse: Individuals with bipolar disorder may experience manic and depressive episodes, and substance abuse can be a way to cope with mood swings or self-medicate during low periods.
  • Eating Disorders and Substance Abuse: Conditions like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating disorder can co-occur with substance abuse as individuals may use substances to cope with body image issues or control weight.
  • Schizophrenia and Substance Abuse: Substance abuse is more common among individuals with schizophrenia, potentially as an attempt to alleviate symptoms or manage side effects of medication.

The Connection Between Mental Health and Addiction

Picture this: mental health and addiction are like two dance partners. Sometimes, one can lead and the other follows. For example, mental health struggles might make someone turn to substances for relief. On the flip side, addiction can mess with the brain, leading to mental health issues. Treating both partners ensures a more harmonious dance.

The Importance of Simultaneous Treatment

Imagine you have two plants—one for mental health and one for addiction. Both need water and sunlight to grow, right? Treating mental health and addiction simultaneously is like giving both plants the care they need. It helps individuals heal from the inside out, addressing the root causes of their challenges.

Breaking the Cycle

Addressing mental health and addiction together disrupts the never-ending loop that often traps individuals. Treating both aspects simultaneously is like completing a puzzle, forming a holistic picture of well-being. Dual diagnosis medical treatment equips individuals with coping tools, acting as a toolkit to navigate mental health challenges and the allure of addiction. These strategies empower individuals to face life’s challenges with resilience, encompassing therapy, medication, mindfulness, exercise, social support, healthy lifestyle choices, journaling, CBT, and more. Seeking professional guidance is crucial for personalized advice, as different approaches work for different people.

A Journey Towards Balance

In essence, treating mental health and addiction together is about finding balance and addressing both sides to ensure a more stable and secure journey. By acknowledging and treating both mental health and addiction, individuals can take steps toward a healthier and more balanced life. The importance of dual diagnosis medical treatment lies in recognizing the interconnectedness of mental health and addiction. By treating both simultaneously, individuals can find balance, break free from cycles, and start on a journey toward long term healing and recovery.

A New Beginning: Get Started With MAT and Break Free from Opioid Addiction

Beginning the path to recovery from opioid addiction is a challenging journey, but with the right planning, tools and support, it’s a journey that can take you from darkness and into the light.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a powerful tool that helps individuals stop opioid abuse and start recovering, combining medications with counseling and support to create a comprehensive approach to overcoming longterm recovery.

Counseling + Medication + Lifestyle Modification = Long Term Recovery Success !

At Recovery Works, our clients undergo a comprehensive journey tailored to  fit their unique needs. The process begins with a thorough assessment, guiding the selection of a suitable medication and is complemented by counseling and behavioral therapies. The program addresses both the psychological and behavioral aspects of substance use. Regular medical monitoring and a flexible schedule allow individuals to seamlessly integrate treatment into their daily lives, applying learned coping skills in real-world situations. Family involvement, peer support, and strategies for relapse prevention contribute to a realistic long term management approach; additionally, individuals may be connected to community resources for enhanced overall well-being. The outpatient setting provides an environment where individuals can receive ongoing support for sustained recovery, depending on their progress and needs.

Breaking the Chains of Addiction

Opioid addiction can feel like you’re being trapped in chains; MAT acts as a key to unlock those chains. The medications used in MAT help manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to control cravings and stop using. This crucial step sets the stage for a successful recovery journey!

Medications used in MAT interact with the brain’s receptors affected by opioids. They help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing individuals to focus on rebuilding their lives without the constant pull of addiction. At RWHC, our patients choosing MAT services most often prescribed Suboxone or Vivitrol.

How does Suboxone work?

Suboxone is an FDA approved medication used for those diagnosis with opiate use disorder, combining buprenorphine (a partial opioid agonist) and naloxone, (an opioid antagonist). Buprenorphine alleviates withdrawal symptoms and cravings by binding to opioid receptors with a milder effect than full opioids, allowing stabilization without intense highs and lows. Naloxone eases cravings and discourages misuse. As part of an MAT program, Suboxone supports individuals in overcoming opioid addiction by easing withdrawal, minimizing cravings, allowing for stability while participating in counseling and behavioral therapies.

How does Vivitrol work?

Vivitrol (extended release injectable naltrexone) is a medication used in the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence. Its active ingredient is naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist. Naltrexone works by blocking the effects of opioids or alcohol at the receptor level in the brain. Unlike medications that contain opioids, Vivitrol does not activate opioid receptors; instead, it binds to them, preventing opioids or alcohol from exerting their usual effects. This helps reduce cravings and the rewarding sensations associated with substance use. Vivitrol is administered as a monthly injection, providing a sustained release of naltrexone. By blocking the opioid receptors, Vivitrol supports individuals in maintaining abstinence from opioids or alcohol, facilitating recovery as part of a comprehensive treatment plan which also includes counseling and behavioral therapies.

A Supportive Framework

MAT is not just about medications; it’s about creating an individualized plan with supportive framework necessary for long term recovery. Counseling and therapy are integral components of MAT, providing individuals with the tools to understand and address the root causes of their addiction. This combination of medication, counseling and support creates a well-rounded approach to a long term recovery plan.

  • Assessment and Evaluation: The first step involves a thorough assessment of the individual’s substance use history, medical and mental health status, and overall treatment needs. This evaluation helps determine the most appropriate course of MAT.
  • Medical Evaluation: A healthcare provider assesses the individual’s physical health, including any co-occurring medical conditions, to ensure the safety and suitability of MAT.
  • Medication Selection: Based on the assessment, a suitable medication is chosen. The choice of medication depends on factors like the severity of the addiction and individual health considerations.
  • Induction: In the case of opioids, individuals may go through an induction phase, where the chosen medication is initiated under close medical supervision to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Stabilization: Once the appropriate medication and dosage are determined, the individual enters a stabilization phase. During this period, the medication helps manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms, supporting the individual in achieving stability.
  • Counseling and Behavioral Therapies: MAT is most effective when combined with counseling and behavioral therapies. These may include individual therapy, group therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).  These components address the psychological and behavioral aspects of substance use.
  • Regular Medical Monitoring: Ongoing medical monitoring is essential to evaluate the individual’s response to the medication, address any side effects, and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.
  • Integration into Comprehensive Treatment: MAT is integrated into a broader treatment plan that addresses various aspects of the individual’s life, including mental health, family dynamics, employment, and social support.
  • Relapse Prevention: MAT programs typically include strategies for relapse prevention, helping individuals develop coping skills and resilience to maintain recovery over the long term.
  • Support Services: MAT programs often connect individuals with support services, such as mutual aid groups like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), to foster peer support and community engagement.
  • Long-Term Maintenance: Depending on the individual’s progress and needs, MAT may continue for an extended period, providing ongoing support for sustained recovery.

Overcoming Stigma

It’s important to understand that seeking help through MAT is a brave and positive choice. Unfortunately, there is sometimes a stigma surrounding medication-assisted treatment. However, MAT has proven to be effective in helping individuals overcome addiction and reclaim their lives.

A Step Towards a Drug-Free Future

MAT is not a quick fix, and those should be committed to a long term treatment plan. By providing relief from cravings and withdrawal symptoms, individuals can focus on building a healthier, drug-free life. MAT serves as a bridge from the chaos of addiction to the stability of recovery.

Celebrating Successes

Every step forward in recovery is a success worth celebrating. MAT allows individuals to achieve milestones without the constant struggle of cravings, reinforcing the belief that a drug-free life is not only possible but achievable.
